An Open Letter to College and University Career Centers - Pathfinder Careers An Open Letter to College and University Career Centers Hi there.  You haven’t met me yet… but I and a whole lot of people would like to make your job a lot easier. We know you are overworked. Understaffed. Not to mention totally stressed out. And with a best guess, most definitely underpaid. After all, your job requires being a resource to each graduation year ranging in size from 500 at the smallest to several thousand students. And quite honestly, that is one tough task… hats are off to the career center staff for pulling it off, year in and year out.  And believe it or not, there are a lot of folks who want to help you.  Honestly, we are not here to tell you how to do your job. We are here to support the hard work that you do. But along the way, we have noticed something. (“We” meaning career service professionals such as résumé writers as well as human resource managers.) Some of the materials being used to train students on developing their career credentials is really outdated.

Come to Yale Law School. Our Vacation Package Can't Be Beat! Come to Yale Law School. Our Vacation Package Can't Be Beat! Time was, back in the late 1800s, schools were desperate for students. Like Kaplan University-desperate. The Times dug up some century-old ads elite schools placed in the papers classifieds, and they show an era when college was once a buyers bazaar for qualified students. Even Columbia, Harvard and Yales law schools were on the hunt for a few good students.Harvard, perhaps fittingly, thought it best to namedrop, listing the names of renowned faculty members in ads run between 1868 and 1871.Columbia opted for the more aggressive approach: the age-old tactic of bashing your competitors with one hand and promising the easy path with the other. In an ad hovering over a pitch for cured hams on Oct. 7, 1871, Columbia Law School assured applicants that (unlike some rivals) its graduates were admitted to the bar without further examination. And Yale Law School, maybe the most selective of all law schools now, might as well have donned a plaid wool jacket.

Email a Professor Today I’m made the 5 hour trek back to my Alma mater, Miami University, Thursday after work to lead a few Entrepreneurial Marketing classes taught by my favorite college professor.  This professor, Mark Lacker, has impacted the way I think. Im not sure exactly how we reconnected.  I know I wrote him an email at some point after graduation and, to this day, I’m very curious what that email said.  Whatever the case I’m really glad I sent that email. It has been 5 years since I sat in the same class that I led last week.  Mark’s class is one of those classes that just clicked with me.  The kind you never forget.  I still have the books from the class and refer to them often (because he assigned us real life, applicable books rather than text books) and still think about the speakers he brought in.  Mark taught me what a blog is, what guerrilla marketing is, how to bootstrap and Mark was the first person who suggested to me that interactive marketing was on the rise.  If I hadn’t been in his class, I would never have started this blog.

What Game of Thrones needs an HR department 3KWe have to admit, 7 years is a long time to spend finding the perfect candidate for a position. But the Iron Throne selection committee feels the importance of this role warrants our rigorous hiring process. Today, while the circumstances for their elimination were regrettable, the brutal deaths of Tommen Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Renley Baratheon, and Viserys Targaryen have left us with four top candidates. Thus, we’re now in what we hope will be the final year of the selection process. We’ve taken a look at their resumes and have some feedback and questions leading into our future interviews.Cersei Lannisters ResumeCerseis status as a strong and independent woman really comes off well, but will the committee see through her veiled attempt to mask her alcoholism?Daenerys Targaryens ResumeDaenerys resume clearly left the committee with more questions than answers. Shes overselling herself in some places and underselling herself in others (slavery pun not intended).
